“What do I do when I wake up?” 

This question is probably the number one question I get in the studio.

In my early days as a curl specialist, I would spin off into the practical tips of sleeping with pineapple and adding a dot of conditioner in your water bottle for a quick refresh.

I always felt a tinge of guilt while it came out of my mouth. Inside I knew that clients would not get the result they wanted by investing in a drawer full of 1980s scrunchies.

When I launched my first online curl course in 2016, I had a module titled “The second-day hair myth.” It felt so good to let the truth out finally. 

On day two, I would still show people how to smooth the hair into submission, but I stopped setting them up for unrealistic expectations.

This morning I had a thought while pouring my morning cup of coffee. I could hear, in my head, the voice of a new client from yesterday with that all too familiar sound of desperation when she asked, “What do I do when I wake up?”.

My thought was this 

The solution isn’t to do a post with all the typical refresh tips. Although this is helpful, I love the practicality of adding value to the lives of those around me.

The more profound work happens before you start wearing your hair in its natural wavy or curly state. 

The absolute truth is that we have only known a structured, controlled, and consistent life in our former straight hair days. The wavy/curly life is not supposed to be like what you learned.

It’s not the same.

It teaches us that we cannot control things. 

The letting go.

Ease—release of perfectionism.

Going with the flow.

Wild and free.

I’m convinced we’ve been trying to fit this new lifestyle into our old paradigm. 

Only when we decide to shift our mindset into a fresh way of doing things..this thing…the wavy/curly thing…will the magic start to happen.

It doesn’t happen ON your head…it happens IN it.
